The Challenges

What challenges did you face?

Ruby turned 18 on her second day aboard. A keen sailor and sportswoman, who’s finishing a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport at Callywith College, Ruby is looking to pursue a Maritime career. “My grandfather is a retired Boat-Builder and he inspired my love of Sailing and the sea. Having sailed a Mirror dinghy to a competitive level I’m keen to undertake a new challenge. This is an amazing opportunity to sail an altogether different boat and be part of a crew who learn and develop experience in rigging, navigating and steering the ship on this epic voyage to Spain.”

The Action

What action did you take?

Ruby was sponsored by Cornwall Marine Network, established in 2002 by local Marine businesses to improve the economic prosperity of businesses in Cornwall’s world-class Marine sector. The Academy was created in 2008 to raise awareness of career opportunities in the sector, delivering vocational training and work experience to young people aged 10 to 24.

The Difference

What difference has this made?

Said Sam Winters: “We know that as well as building self-confidence and gaining new skills, past venturers have used the voyage to get further experience in the Marine sector, including paid work, so we’re very happy to support Team Maybe 2023 and we wish them well in the race to Spain.”

What would you say about your experience?

Said Ruby: “I had the most wonderful week learning new skills with a great group of people. It gave me an invaluable insight into life at sea and has inspired me to pursue a career in the Royal Navy. The trip has confirmed how much I love being on the ocean. Night watch and seeing dolphins swimming in bioluminescience was an incredible highlight.
