Cornwall Marine Academy Ambassadors - Marine Industry Opportunities and Training

Kathy King

Kathy King is a Science and Psychology specialist who has worked with a variety of vulnerable groups including young people with special educational needs, including social, emotional and behavioural problems, and the homeless. She is passionate about showing others the power of being active in nature and using outdoor activities as a tool to improve emotional literacy (self-awareness, motivation, self-regulation, empathy and social skills).

How did you get into the job role?

Mainstream teaching does not work for everyone and I have been working in the alternative education sector for over 15 years, delivering outdoor education like Forest School and working on Life Skills curriculum. I still tutor mainstream subjects but usually to home-school families and individuals who need a bit of extra support to achieve their goals.

What would you consider is the best part about your job?

I get to help young people overcome their fears and anxieties and get them out doing various activities in beautiful blue and green spaces in Cornwall. What’s not to love about that!

Where do you operate in Cornwall?

St Austell Bay area of South Cornwall.
