Cornwall Marine Academy Ambassadors - Marine Industry Opportunities and Training

Matthew Barraud

As founder of Morvargh Sailing Project CIC, I have a proven record of success in sail training and youth development with several projects such as #SoundSense (marine science voyages) and #ASPIRE360 (a circumnavigation of the UK). A natural leader and motivator, with strong powers of empathy and negotiation born out of working with young people in a residential education setting.

What would you consider is the best part about your job?

Inspiring young people to push their boundaries and realise their full potential, and to use sail training to inspire and change lives.

How did you get into the job role?

After going back to education in my 20s, I found the amazing world of sail training. This made a profound impact on my life, which caused a massive change in direction for me. There is something about sail training and working with young people that inspires me massively. Seeing the positive change in a young person after just a few shorts days; helping them push their boundaries, and discover their true potential is very humbling. I ended up writing a youth programme to be delivered on tall ships and volunteering for an organisation based in Southampton.

Where do you operate in Cornwall?

Fowey, however we sail throughout the South West and further afield to ports in Europe.
